Our Allotment.

A couple of weeks ago I got an email though saying my name had made it to the top of the allotment waiting list. Pretty exciting! Dixon and me went to meet the lady in charge of lettings and have a look around. We did plan to get a half plot, but decided on a full one; which is pretty huge... 250sq meters of huge.

The last owner of the plot abandoned it, based on the condition it hasn't been worked for a while. Its pretty grassy, so yesterday we started turning over the soil; we did maybe 3 hours work before giving up for the day- it was t o u g h. My feet, legs arms and hands ache like crazy now. And we're only maybe 1/8th through it? The allotment is definitely going to be my new gym. Next on the to-do list is planning what we're going to grow and how we're going to set the whole thing out.

It's our first time growing on this kind of scale (balcony/windowsill gardens are pretty limiting) so  we're sort of thinking of this year as a test run. We've decided that if we like to eat it and it can grow in this country we're going to give it a go. We're already started some things at home; chillies, potatoes, cucumber and tomatoes. I'm hoping for loads of garlic, strawberries, courgettes and one huge pumpkin too.

It's going to be so much work, but it is going to be so much more satisfying at the end. And we're definitely going to learn a lot.

  1. Good luck with your digging - my parents have had allotments ever since I was little - nothing beats veggies straight from the ground. Now i can't wait to get a garden to turn part of it into a veg and fruit patch.

  2. Mmmm, we are just moving our strawberry patch on our allotment. French beans and squash do well for us - potatoes not so much!
