Netflix Picks #4

Its been a while since I had chance to sit down and share with you some of the things I've been watching recently. I had a couple of days holiday from work recentlyt , along with a weekend at home alone, so I had a chance to watch a million documentaries (some of which are pretty depressing, be warned) and start on a new series too! Here they are;

Pollock - When I was in high school and college I was a bit of an art geek. Jackson Pollock was one artist I really really loved. I made a trip down to London when I was around 14 to see some of his work in the Tate Modern and it was the best day! This film starts in 1941, when Pollock is a basically unknown painter living with his brother. He's pretty drunk most of the time, and through the whole film he fights through his alcoholism. One day, Lee Krasner, knocks on the door (she has the most amazing dresses!). She becomes his manager, they get married and they move out of New York City together. Then, after a bit of a struggle Pollock begins to get recognition for his paintings and loses it. He cheats, he drinks and it gets pretty sad. I mean really sad! I loved this film.

Sylvia - Another not so happy film, which I'm sure already guessed by the subject matter, but one with the most amazing dresses! The film is all about Sylvia Plaths relationship with Ted Hughes, their marriage, children, struggle and their separation. A lot of people blame Hughes for Plaths eventual suicide. Obviously this is a dramatised version of exactly what went on, so don't expect to finish the film with more facts to base your opinion on. All the same, I was engrossed. It made me want to go back and read her work again. I also had no idea what Plath is buried in my country either, I'll be making a visit there soon for sure.

Riding in Cars with Boys - I loved this! A teenager becomes pregnant with a son and makes the super bold decision to have him and bring him up herself. (I'm obsessed with programs involving young Mums!) She ends up marrying the dumb farther to please her own Dad, who she was really close with her whole childhood. Things don't work out exactly as she hopes; she dreams of going to college and becoming a writer! Shes realises that she is missing out on so much. A whole bunch of stuff happens and we see the grown up son, angry at his Mum for being a selfish dreamer. Drew Barrymore does a great job!! I recommend it.

I've also started on Downton Abbey, after hearing a whole load of people talking about it. Its the easiest to watch (I got through the first series in no time),  I love that in a series because its my background entertainment when I'm sewing! I've also started on series 4 of 24! Wow. Have a wonderful weekend! Don't forget to recommend me something.

    1. Give it a watch! I know its pretty morbid, but the whole 50s set up is beautiful!

      Is it not based on the book the whole story is about?! I dunno!
